Signs your PTO shaft needs replacing

Step 1: Measure the shaft length correctly
PTO shafts are commonly telescoping, made of two sections that slide within each other to accommodate different hitch distances. Measure and record both the fully collapsed length and the fully extended length, since a replacement needs to match the working range of your specific implement setup - not just the tractor. If the original shaft is still intact, measure it directly rather than relying on an implement's listed specification, since shafts are sometimes trimmed to fit during original installation.
Step 2: Identify the spline configuration on each end
The tractor-side and implement-side connections often use different spline counts and shaft diameters. Common configurations on agricultural equipment include 6-spline and 21-spline (1-3/8") shafts, though this varies by implement and by the specific 6-Series model and year. Rather than assuming a configuration, check your tractor's operator manual or count the splines directly on the damaged shaft if any sections are still identifiable.
Always verify against your operator's manual. PTO specifications can vary between model years and configurations even within the same tractor series. Step 3: Note the yoke and guard type
Beyond spline count, check whether the connection uses a quick-disconnect yoke, a standard bolt-on yoke, or a specific locking collar style. Shielding varies too - some shafts use a full-length plastic guard with bearings at each end, others use a cone-and-shield combination. Replacing a shaft with mismatched shielding is a real safety issue, not just a fit issue, so this detail matters as much as the spline count.
Step 4: Decide on material and duty rating
PTO shafts for row-crop and general utility work are typically fine with standard shaft construction, but heavier-draw implements - tillage equipment, larger mowers, grain augers - may need a heavier-duty shaft rated for higher torque.
